Three Years Old (and then some)

Hi.  Remember me?  I haven't forgotten about my blog; I've just been involved in some other projects and have been neglecting it.  So . . . I'll try to cover two months in 1 post.

My baby boy is three now!  Since our birthdays are only three days apart, we did most of our celebrating together.  We went out to eat, and Daddy made us a chocolate pie for dessert.

Cooper got a bicycle helmet, which he LOVES, and a dump truck, which Don is a little jealous of.

He got a number of other things, including a new wagon (a hand-me-down from a friend of mine) . . .

. . . and a new "big boy" bed!

We also celebrated on Cooper's birthday by bringing cupcakes when we had lunch with our friends that we go out with after church most Sundays.

On the Sunday before Halloween, we went to "Awesome Autumn," which was a Halloween alternative at a local church.  Cooper wore the same costume he wore last year, which he had almost, but not quite, outgrown.  He still looked pretty cute in it (at least in his mom's opinion).

We've been going to "craft class" at my friend Debby's house every other Monday, which has been fun for both of us.

We also went to Pump It Up one day with some friends from my MOPS group, where we climbed and bounced and slid down slides and did all sorts of things that reminded Mommy that she is not as young as she used to be.

The weather has been mostly nice (though we did have our first snow a few days ago -- the earliest I ever remember, but it was short-lived).  We've been making the most of the nice weather, though, and getting outside as much as we can.

We've been working on potty training.  It has not been as easy as I had hoped, but we're making progress, slowly but surely.

Don is still unemployed.  This has been a longer journey than we ever expected it to be, but we're surviving.  Hopefully something will come along soon.  As we celebrate this season of Thanksgiving, we are thankful that, though this year hasn't turned out like we expected it to, God has provided for our needs, and we are all healthy and doing okay.  Life comes with bumps in the road, and I think we will look back on this one and be able to see the good in it.  God doesn't always do things according to our plans, but His plan is far better, and we are holding on to that knowledge.

Celebrations

Cooper and I both had birthdays last week.  I turned, well, old, as evidenced by an increasing amount of gray hair and decreasing ability to read without glasses.  Oh well.  I'm thankful for every year God gives me.
For Cooper, it was the big 0-2.  Yes, my sweet baby is a terrible two!  Actually, he hasn't really been that terrible so far.  We had a great visit with Don's parents this weekend, who came to help us celebrate, and my parents also joined us on Sunday for his party.
He got to eat cake

and open lots of presents.
He loves his new "Wheel"
as well as the other things he got.

I'm not sure where we're going to put them all.

In spite of several difficult things that have happened, I would have to say that these past two years have been the best two years of my life.  I have so much to be thankful for!

A Day to Remember

This past Saturday was my dad's 77th birthday.  Wow, that's old!

Since my brother and his family moved to Boone, NC, we don't get to see them all that often, so I suggested to my brother that maybe we could all meet in Knoxville (the halfway point) on that day.  He was agreeable.  My dad was thrilled with the idea.  My mom joined us as well.
We decided to meet at the Cracker Barrel in Kodak, TN, just east of Knoxville, since there was a UT game that day and we didn't want to get caught up in the crowd.  After lunch we drove to Jefferson City to Cherokee Dam Park and spent some time there.

My niece, Grace, who has recently started playing the flute (which thrills me to no end), gave us a mini-concert.

Before we left, his grandchildren sang a lovely rendition of "Happy Birthday" to my dad.

All in all (well, aside from that), it was a wonderful day.  It was great to see my brother and his family, and Cooper loved hanging out with his cousins.  I believe my dad, as well as the rest of us, were very blessed by it all.

Happy birthday, Papaw!

The Big Day

My baby boy is a year old! We celebrated his birthday with a party which included all four of his grandparents. Don's parents (right) came all the way from Iowa.
He had his first cupcake ever. He ate every bite of it . . . every crumb . . . in mere seconds! Guess he takes after his mom in that regard.
He got lots of presents.
He is a blessed little boy! And we are very blessed to have him!

Thankfulness

I wished a friend from my Bible study a happy birthday today. But I think that, rather than being happy, she is somewhat depressed because it is a "big one." (40, I assume) Well, that one has come and gone for me, but it made me realize that I really don't lament my birthdays anymore, not even the big ones. Since my friend Pam died of cancer at age 38, leaving behind 5 children, I know firsthand that none of us really knows how much time we have left. Every year, every day, every breath we take is a gift, not to be taken for granted. Now I am thankful for every birthday I have: another year to live, and now another year to raise my child and watch him grow.

So I encourage you, as I encouraged my friend today, not to dread your birthdays or even be depressed by them, but to use them as an opportunity to thank God for another year of life.

75 Years . . . and Counting

Today is my dad's 75th birthday, a pretty big one, if you ask me!

We had a little family get-together for him on Sunday to celebrate.
I am thankful he's been around for three-quarters of a century now, and that he's still in relatively good health. Should we shoot for a full century?? You never know -- his mom lived to be 97.

Happy birthday, Dad. And many, many more!

Party On

Don and I partied all weekend. I guess we should; we had a lot to celebrate!

Friday night I fixed dinner for him for his birthday. Saturday night we went out to dinner to celebrate our anniversary, and last night my brother and sister-in-law hosted the family at their house for another birthday celebration, including grilling, cake, gifts and games.
Apples to Apples is a family favorite!

I think everyone had a good time, though it turned out to be just a bit too much for some of us. (I was feeling this way by the end of the night as well.)
Next year we'll have another family member to join our celebrations!

A Day to Celebrate

Five years ago today I was walking down the aisle at Hickory Grove Presbyterian Church to be married to a wonderful man. It was his birthday.

Now it's his birthday again, and we're celebrating 5 years of marriage. And we are very thankful. Thankful to have each other as companions in this crazy world. Thankful for our health, for a roof over our heads, food on the table, our families, our dogs and all the many ways God has blessed us in these 5 years.

This year we are especially thankful because God is blessing us again with a baby boy due in October. In some ways we are afraid of what lies ahead for us and our son, but we just have to trust that it's all in God's hands. And He is good. He has blessed us beyond our wildest dreams, and I pray that He will continue to do so as we journey through this life together.

Happy birthday AND happy anniversary to my husband Don. And many, many more.

Happy Birthday Mom!

I want to wish my mom a happy 70th birthday. I thank God for the years He's given her and pray He'll give her many, many more!

I'm Back!

Hi, remember me? It's been a while. I simply haven't had time to blog because I've been consumed with this. My mom is turning 70 this week, and we (my brother and I and our spouses) decided to make a scrapbook for her, getting friends and family from throughout her life to contribute to it. It was a MAJOR project, which I couldn't blog about because it was a big surprise!

We also had a surprise party yesterday, inviting a few of her close, local friends and family. My brother and sister-in-law made the wonderful food for it, but it still kept me busy with invitations and RSVP's and getting my house cleaned up (no small task). I believe my mom was very blessed by all this, as we had hoped she would be. She hasn't been looking forward to this big birthday, but hopefully this made it all a little better.
I don't know what to do with myself now that it's all over. Actually, it's just about time to start working on my garden . . .

Birthday Girl

Happy 12th birthday to my sweet dog, Dasha. Since she came into my life, she has truly been to me the meaning of her name -- a gift of God.

Another Year

If you're VERY observant, you may notice that I changed "42" to "43" years old in my "About Me" section. Yes, another year has passed, and today I celebrate its passing. I am thankful for each year of life God gives me.

Today will likely be uneventful. I have already celebrated with my family, and Don and I are celebrating next Saturday since we have a church dinner tonight. Still I am thankful . . . that I had 30 e-mails this morning, most of them "happy birthday" wishes, and that doesn't count the ones I have already gotten, in addition to cards and other gifts and wishes. God has blessed me with wonderful family and friends, and that in itself is a reason to celebrate!

Aboard the General Jackson

My mom took us on a dinner cruise on the General Jackson last night to celebrate Don’s recent birthday, and mine, which is in October. She also brought her friend Peg, to celebrate her birthday, which was in July. We all had a really great time! The General Jackson is a riverboat that sails on the Cumberland River in Nashville. The cruise lasted three hours. It was a perfect night, and we were able to enjoy the breeze blowing off the water as evening set in. We had an elegant and tasty dinner which included a salad, prime rib, au gratin potatoes, asparagus, rolls and strawberry shortcake. After dinner, there was a 1-hour show that we watched from our tables. It was called “Country Music USA” and was a tribute to many of the key figures in country music from its inception until now. They displayed pictures of them on a screen and sang a hit song for each one of them. The show also included a bit of gospel music (also a big industry in Nashville) and patriotic music. It was very entertaining!
We sat at the table with a local couple who was celebrating their 51st anniversary, and another who told us that she (the wife) had donated one of her kidneys to him (the husband) one year ago. They were both doing well.

I think this cruise is a great way to celebrate a special event or, if you’re visiting Nashville, a way to get a good taste of the city. You get to see downtown, the Titans’ stadium and enjoy some good music as well. They offer different types of cruises at various prices, and if you’re lucky, you may be able to find a discount coupon. This was the first time Don and I had done this, but I would definitely do it again if I had the opportunity.
