I don’t know what I think about Halloween. Some years I think it is evil and boycott it altogether. Other years I go ahead and pass out candy to trick-or-treaters, thinking it really is a good opportunity to get to know and reach out to my neighbors. If I had kids, they would probably really resent me if I didn’t let them go trick-or treating. When I was growing up, I never thought of Halloween as bad. We dressed up as witches, ghosts, skeletons and other sinister things, though we weren’t Christians then.
Am I caving in to the world, putting cultural standards over God’s? I don’t know! What do you think? Is Halloween just a time to have fun or is it inherently evil?

We've thought through it and pondered different views as well. I don't know if we are right or wrong, which is how I feel about many of the things we choose as parents. We have come to the place where we feel that it is okay to have fun with something and to be careful not to go overboard in any one area. Obviously with four kiddos they each may have different areas of interest and might struggle with the things we choose as their parents more than others. I'm not real big on the scary type costumes, but none of them have asked to be any of those yet. As they get a little older we can discuss the history of Halloween and the other holidays, but for now our children LOVE to dress up and LOVE candy
I have also questioned this very topic often since I became a christian, but have decided that it is what your motivation behind what you are doing. It is one of those issues that can be looked at from many different perspectives....I can only go by our experiences with Britt. I decided I would post on this topic as well, just to see what other's views are!
I think Halloween is fun and a good time of fellowship and memories. I do think at Halloween there is a lot more evil kind of things that go on and gives people that have bad intentions opportunity to do bad things (not that they wouldn't anyways). In the past we have tried to be a witness in some or another way by either carving a pumpkin with a cross, or Jesus' name. So, I think you can make it a time to be a light in the darkness. You can also pass out children's tracts with your candy and things like that.
Bottom line is I think that it is all in what you make of it and Halloween can be exciting, fun and can be a great time to make fun-filled memories with family and friends!
Like Melissa, we've prayed through this every year, and each year, we've done something different.
Now that our kids are older, we help in a Trunk of Treats sponsored by our church. That way, our children can do something, but we are also involved in community ministry.
See you tomorrow...
